Mid 1960s – Early 70s;
Minimalism
Like a Marine, once an Abstract Expressionist, always an Abstract Expressionist as Ekstrom devoutly considered himself, although in the mid nineteen sixties his art evolves from gestural brushstrokes of organic forms to simple geometric shapes and patterns painted with flat even tones of color typical of the predominant Minimalist movement of that time. Most of these paintings are missing as Ekstrom was a master of composition and the works were either sold or given to friends and family; Minimalist Art may sound meager but its’ characteristic large size and rich vibrant colors, often pronounced through contrast, manifested itself as an ideal accoutrement to the architecture of those retro-modern spaces in homes during “The Jetsons” era everywhere. Perhaps someday these works will resurface.
